Self-service farm shops and honesty boxes

A self-service farm shop lets you select and pay for products yourself during the stated hours. It may be a shelf with a payment box, a shop with a self-checkout or a vending machine. These are different ways to buy: check the instructions for the particular point of sale, not just the farm's name.

Sources checked online on 28 October 2026. This is a dated reading of the sources, not a site visit or a guarantee of today's opening hours.

Pay the seller's displayed prices and follow their instructions. A directory profile does not reserve stock, arrange a farm visit or enable online ordering. Orders available on GetEats keep their listed prices and checkout terms.

Self-service is broader than an honesty box

Honesty box payment (HBP) means trust-based payment without a cashier supervising the transaction. A physical cash box is one example. We show this refinement only when the arrangement is explicitly documented or declared, separately from the broader self-service fact.

A coin-operated milk dispenser is self-service, but the machine controls dispensing. A self-checkout may also control the transaction. Neither mechanism alone proves an honesty-box arrangement.

Payment methods do not prove the sales arrangement

Cash, TWINT, cards, invoices and bank transfers describe how money is paid. A TWINT sign alone does not establish HBP, and accepting cash does not establish that a shop is unstaffed. Different products at the same farm may use different payment methods.

Read the product-specific payment instructions before taking goods. Bring an accepted payment method; do not assume change, card acceptance or a working mobile connection. The directory supplies information, not payment terminals or GetEats payment codes for purchases on site.

Hours, access and evidence have limits

Self-service does not mean open around the clock. A shop can have staffed Sundays, seasonal produce or a separate seedling stand with different hours. Check the exact sales address and access conditions; the contact address need not be the entrance to the shop.

A source checked online is not field verification. Unknown payment methods or hours remain unknown, not unavailable. An old announcement, a map pin or a general farm description is not proof of current stock or today's access.

Dated examples from the sources

These examples explain the distinctions. They are not a complete national register and do not automatically add profiles to the live selection below.

Stockhof, Mülligen, Switzerland

The farm's MyFarm listing describes a 24-hour self-service shop. Fresh milk uses a coin-operated dispenser; the other products can be paid for in cash or with TWINT. The payment scope matters: this does not establish a single honesty-box arrangement for the entire range. Recheck the listing before travelling.

Ufem Chalt, Staffelbach, Switzerland

The MyFarm listing separates self-service Monday to Saturday, 09:00–18:00, from staffed service on Sunday, 10:00–18:00. It lists cash and TWINT. Those statements support conditional self-service hours, not an always-unstaffed shop or a separately confirmed honesty box.

Read the source

Biohof Gompelmann, Euscheid, Germany

The operator's Bio to go page explicitly says it has installed a Kasse des Vertrauens, a trust-based cash box, and describes day-and-night shopping. This is direct evidence for an honesty-box arrangement in Germany, not evidence about Swiss farms or the availability of every product pictured.

Before you visit

  • Check the sales point's address, current self-service hours and seasonal restrictions.
  • Read the displayed prices and accepted payment methods for the products you want.
  • Confirm stock or access with the producer when unclear; a listing is not a reservation.
  • Respect private areas and storage instructions. Self-service access does not open the whole farm to visitors.

Self-service profiles in the live directory

This selection uses the directory's current self-service records. It is not a count of all farms in a country or of verified honesty boxes. A map can show fewer profiles when usable coordinates are missing.
